Moroccan folktales (Hykayat in Arabic, Tinfas in Tamazight) are an ancient form of oral literature. Storytellers — known as hlaykia in Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fnaa square — kept these tales alive for centuries, blending Berber legends, Arabic tradition, Sufi wisdom, and echoes of sub-Saharan and Andalusian influence.
Many tales feature recurring characters: the clever Joha, the wise old woman, the cunning jackal, the supernatural Aicha Qandisha, and noble figures like Sidi Hmad. Each story carries a moral — about generosity, patience, justice, or the price of greed.
