The Ancestors' Amulet
Once upon a time, in a secluded village nestled between quiet mountains, lived a wise woman named Amas N'mmas. Her name was known far and wide for her insight and clarity of mind. Women from nearby villages would come seeking her counsel — be it for matters of love, family, or mysteries too deep for ordinary understanding.
One day, a troubled young man arrived at her humble hut, his face drawn with worry and exhaustion. His name was Idriss. The old woman welcomed him gently and invited him to sit by the crackling fire. In a calm, nurturing voice, she asked: "What brings you here, my son? Speak, and free your heart."
For months now, I've been hearing voices at night calling my name from the forest. When I go out to look, I find nothing. Then came dreams — always the same — of an ancient river and a face I don't know, but that fills me with dread.
Amas N'mmas closed her eyes briefly, as if listening to a voice from beyond. Then she opened them and said: "These are not mere dreams. They are messages from the past. The river you see is the River of the Ancestors. And the face that frightens you bears a truth yet unheard."
She stood and took from the shelf a small mirror wrapped in gazelle leather. Handing it to Idriss, she said: "Take this mirror. On the night of the full moon, go to the source of the ancient river outside the village. Speak to it of your fears, and watch what unfolds. Do not fear — for only the brave may open the doors of understanding."
On the night of the full moon, he walked through the forest in silence, hearing nothing but the rustle of leaves and the crunch of autumn beneath his feet. He reached the river's source, sat on a large rock, placed the mirror before him, and spoke softly: "Mysterious face… who are you? Why do you visit my dreams? What do you want from me?"
At first, nothing happened. Then a mist began to swirl across the mirror's surface. A face emerged — old, hollow-eyed, yet filled with a sorrow deeper than time. It spoke, its voice like a wind echoing from the mountains: "I am your forefather, Idriss… A promise was broken generations ago, and now it must be restored."
The spirit revealed that Idriss's ancestor had taken a sacred amulet from the Land of the Ancestors, hiding it in a cave where no soul dared enter. The restless spirits could find no peace until the stolen treasure was returned to its rightful place.
Following the spirit's guidance, Idriss found the broken tree at the heart of the forest, touched its trunk, and watched as the ground trembled and revealed a hidden passage. Deep within the earth, he discovered a golden amulet engraved with Amazigh symbols and set with a single green stone.
When he returned the amulet to the river's source, a great weight lifted from his soul. The whispers of the ancient ones finally found peace, and Idriss lived the rest of his life in harmony, remembered as the wise man who reconciled the living with the spirits of the past.
